Monthly Report July 2024

Dear Citizens,
We hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy 4th of July with family and friends. Thank you to those who have served and continue to serve. Please don't take your freedoms for granted for regardless of what we feel and see some days, we are a blessed nation.
Each year on July 7th we remember the five that lost their lives eight years ago as well as those injured and effected by the horrific Dallas attack. Those that convey the protective role of law enforcement officers and the strength, courage and valor that are distinctive of those who serve and protect. It is definitely not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.
DPD Senior Cpl. Lorne Ahrens, DPD Officer Michael Krol, DPD Sgt. Michael Smith, DART Officer Brent Thompson and DPD Officer Patricio "Patrick" Zamarripa.
I was proud to attend the 146th annual Sheriff's Association of Texas training conference this month in Ft. Worth. Numerous Sheriffs from across Texas were in attendance at this year's conference receiving current updates and training. This month we held a 3-day County Correctional Firearms training course for our newest correctional officers at the NCSO range.
Congratulations to the following officers who were promoted this month at the NCSO: Deputy Michael Feemster to Detention Corporal, Joey Palos to Patrol Sergeant, Kit Waldrop to Patrol Sergeant and Russell (Rusty) Perry to Patrol Captain. We want to wish all these officers all the very best with their new positions at the NCSO. We want to introduce our new three newest NCSO correctional officers Briar Greene, Matthew Smith and Marleigh Ward. All three officers are beginning their law enforcement career and we certainly want to wish them all the bery best with their new positions here at the NCSO.
Our newest NCSO Deputies, Gary Wright and Addison Feemster, recently graduated from the Navarro College Police Academy and have already passed the State Peace Officers exam. Both Deputy Wright and Feemster have now began the 16-week patrol FTO program here at the NCSO. After completing the FTO program Deputy Wright will be assigned to the patrol division and Deputy Feemster will be assigned to courthouse security. We wish both Deputy Wright and Deputy Feemster all the best in their new law enforcement career serving the citizens of Navarro County.
It's hard to believe another summer has come and gone and students are headed back to class soon, teachers have once again gotten their classrooms ready, school bus routes or being worked out, administrators are working on staffing and school safety concerns. More school districts have decided to go to a four-day school week and will have some teachers, students, staff and parents coordinating work and school schedules, car pools and support for their child's activities and after school commitments.
I ask every year that you be extra cautious and aware when driving and in school traffic. Be mindful of all our school zones especially during the morning hours and early afternoons. Keep an extra look out for potential hazards around our schools and in neighborhoods where children are more active walking, riding bikes and at play. Please slow down and increase your stopping distances.
Please be patient in school traffic and congested areas such as around Corsicana High School and Collin's Middle School.
Remember when approaching a school zone or school bus on the road, be prepared to stop for bus and pedestrian traffic and by all means do not text and drive. Obey ALL "No cell phone" posted signs. I want to thank all of you who help make our education system an integral, positive force in our community. Our children are counting on us so let's work together to make "Back to School" a rewarding, fun and safe time for all Navarro County residents.
The Sheriff's Office had approximately 2,984 calls for service in July and our dispatch received 1,730 calls for assistance to 9-1-1. There were approximately 178 persons arrested and booked into the Navarro County Justice Center and the average daily jail population was 211 inmates. Ten inmates were transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and four inmates were transferred to State Jail to serve their sentences.
In July, we sold an estray horse and estray donkey at Elkhart Horse Sale for $570.00 as well as sold five head of county owned cattle at Athens Livestock Auction for $5,757.14.
We are accepting applications for all divisions and currently have vacancies in detention, dispatch, patrol, communications and criminal investigation. Once again, the hiring age for dispatch and detention has been lowered to 18 but with all other enforcement positions, you must be 21 or older to apply. As in the past, applications will continue to be taken for any vacancy until the position is filled.
