Monthly Report for June 2023

Dear Citizens,
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Independence Day with family and friends and I also hope you take a moment to be grateful and realize, especially now more than ever before, all that the holiday stands for and why we celebrate it.
This month marks the one year anniversary that we began to publish a new concept on our NCSO Facebook page called Wanted Wednesday. This is in conjunction with our local Crime Stoppers program which by the way is the second oldest crime stopper program in Texas. If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of any Wanted Wednesday suspect and would like to remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers at 903-874-8477, submit a tip online at www.p3tips.com/1464 or download the app P3 Tips. Reward available. #Wanted Wednesday #NavCoCrimeStoppers
Some of the recent stolen equipment recoveries and significant activity:
On June 13th our NCSO Deputies and Detectives assisted the Ellis County Sheriff's Office with the recovery of a stolen 36ft gooseneck flatbed trailer that had recently been reported stolen in Ellis County. The stolen trailer was located and recovered at a location off SW CR 2380 in Navarro County. The stolen and recovered trailer was valued by the owner at $15,000.
On Wednesday, June 14th at approximately 08:28 pm, Corporal Palos and Deputy Minze were dispatched to the Valero gas station at 10414 S Hwy 287 in reference to a welfare concern. Deputies arrived and made contact with the sole occupant of the vehicle who had reportedly been in the parking lot for roughly four hours. Upon contact Deputies detected an odor of Marihuana emitting from the vehicle. While conducting a pat down of the occupant for officer safety, a glass pipe used for smoking methamphetamine and an unused syringe was located on his person. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, Deputies located: 9 grams of Methamphetamine, 1.6 grams of Oxycodone, and 13.9 grams of Marihuana. During the contact Deputies also located and seized approximately $14,095 of US currency. An asset forfeiture case will be filed against the US currency. The suspect was charged with Possession of Marihuana under 2oz, Manufacture / delivery of controlled substance penalty group 1>=1G<4G, Manufacture /delivery controlled substance penalty group 1>=4G<200G
On Friday, June 23rd, the NCSO Patrol Division responded to the reported theft of an excavator in the 5000 Block of the E Hwy 31 Business Loop near Corsicana. The same day, our NCSO Detectives responded to the 8400 Block of NE CR 2071 and located what they believed to be the stolen excavator. A search warrant was issued for the property and the stolen excavator was recovered along with another stolen excavator that had been reported stolen out of Cedar Hill. Detectives also located and recovered three trailers, several other implements that were also reported stolen as well as several Marihuana plants observed in plain view at the location. The firearms that were found on the property were taken as evidence in a possible felon in possession of a firearm investigation. Detectives have identified a person of interest in this case but no arrest has been made at this time as an investigation will continue.
Congratulations to NCSO officers Matt Phillips, Breanna Parks and Todd Ackerman-Ybarra on graduating from the Navarro College Police Academy. Also a well-earned and deserving congratulations to Deputy Matt Phillips on receiving the Jason Westmoreland Academic Achievement Award. We wish all of these graduates the best of luck in their future endeavors.
Congratulations to this month's promotions, transfers and new hires:
Patrol Corporal Eric Wilson was promoted to Sergeant in our Criminal Investigation Division, Patrol Corporal Patrick Rider has been promoted to Patrol Sergeant, Detention Corporal Kevin Swanson has been promoted to Detention Sergeant, Deputy Matt Phillips has transferred from corrections to the patrol division. Matt recently graduated from the Navarro College Police Academy and has now passed the State Peace Officers Examination. Matt has been with the NCSO sixteen years and was a Sergeant in corrections before entering the police academy.
We are proud to introduce our newest NCSO correctional officers Darious Slade and Cynthia Hudson. Mrs. Hudson was previously a Sergeant at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice with five years experience as a prison guard as well as introducing our newest NCSO Patrol Deputy Russell Perry. Officer Perry has previous experience as a patrol deputy and sergeant with the Hill County Sheriff's Office and also recently as an officer for the Navarro College Department of Public Safety. We wish him and all these officers, the best with their new positions at the NCSO.
The Sheriff's Office had approximately 2,764 calls for service in June and our dispatch received 2,779 calls for assistance to 9-1-1. There were approximately 159 persons arrested and booked into the Navarro County Justice Center and the average daily jail population was 229 inmates. Thirteen inmates were transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and two inmates were transferred to State Jail to serve their sentences.
In June, we estrayed one bull, two horses and hauled them to our county farms. We sold an estray bull at Corsicana Livestock Auction for $1,223.69 and collected $195 in estray fees.
We are accepting applications for all divisions and currently have vacancies in detention, dispatch, patrol, and courthouse security. Once again, the hiring age for dispatch and detention has been lowered to 18 but with all other enforcement positions, you must be 21 or older to apply. As in the past, applications will continue to be taken for any vacancy until the position is filled. "
