Monthly Report for January 2018

Dear Citizens,

I, my family and all of us here at the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, would like to extend our best wishes for a prosperous and happy New Year. We look forward to helping make 2018 a safe year for all those in our community. Please be assured as Sheriff that my commitment to the citizens remains strong and I will continue to work with you to improve the quality of life for the current and future residents of Navarro County and it is my hope that 2018 will be a year when those in our community will continue to extend a helping hand to their neighbors, coworkers, family, friends and strangers in need. It's a real pleasure to say "thank you" to all those that have supported me and the men and women of the NCSO as we continue to strive in making our county a safer place to live and raise our families. We appreciate you all and we wish you a full year of happiness, health and success.

Please contact my office if I, or any of my staff, can ever be of any assistance.

We would like to thank the many individuals and businesses throughout our county who brought food and deserts to the NCSO this holiday season or simply took the time to wish our officers Merry Christmas and let us know that you were thinking of us.

Again this year I am proud to announce that the NCSO participated in the Annual Spirit of Christmas Food Box Giveaway. This years event was hosted by the Navarro County Food Pantry, Kiwanis Club, Brookshires, Super One Food Stores, local Churches and schools as well as many other donations being made by local individuals. Hundreds of boxes of food were given out to Navarro County families in need during today's event. The Navarro County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team also helped to make the giveaway a great success by helping carry the food packages out to the families in the inclement weather. I am proud that our SWAT team was a part of this years annual event. I think, and stress, that it’s very important that our tactical unit is not just known as a bunch of guys who only kick in doors and are ONLY Special Weapons and Tactics. This event gave the public an opportunity to meet them and see who they really are which is human, compassionate and eager to participate in something that benefits those in our community. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this a wonderful success.

Santa’s helpers from the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office also delivered approximately 250 gift packages to the inmates at the Justice Center on Christmas Eve. The gift packages were prepared and delivered by our local Salvation Army after being donated by Obe Veldman of Veldman Land and Cattle. With my approval, Detention Officers of the NCSO delivered the gift packages to every inmate within the facility, so that they could experience the true meaning of Christmas.

The Navarro County Sheriff's Office held its annual holiday meal at the Justice Center. Our employees, various other county employees and guests were in attendance. A very special thank you to David A. and David B. Nyquist for donating the delicious BBQ, the many NCSO employees who helped to prepare this years meal as well as the many individuals and companies for their desert donations. I personally want to thank Darron Richardson, Becky Hatchel, Tracy Tincher Cardwell and Teresa Burnett for all their hard work in making the gathering a special event that was enjoyed by all.

The Sheriff's Office had approximately 1,741 calls for service in December and our Dispatch received 2,186 calls for assistance to 9-1-1. In The 2017 we had 40,195 calls for service and 24,312 calls to 9-1-1 here at the NCSO.

There were approximately 268 persons arrested and booked into the Navarro County Justice Center and the average daily jail population was 237 inmates.

The Narcotics Unit arrested sixteen suspects, filed 20 criminal cases and served 22 outstanding arrest warrants. Thirteen inmates were transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and 7 other inmates were transferred to State Jail and SAFP units to serve their sentences. This month we estrayed one bull and one horse and transported them to the county farm. We sold 7 estray horses and 2 estray donkeys at Elkhart horse sale for $1,664.50 and we also recovered $1,610 in estray fees this month.

The Navarro County Sheriff’s Office still has hay for sale. The hay is a mix of coastal, rye grass and Johnson grass that was recently baled at our Petty's Chapel farm. The hay is 4x6 net wrapped round bale hay. The price is $40 per roll with a ten roll minimum purchase. Loading is available. Contact Captain Jeramy Phillips at 903-654-3002 to purchase yours today.

Congratulations to Deputy Clayton VanLoocke on successfully completing the patrol FTO program and being transferred from courthouse security to the patrol division.

We are currently accepting applications for dispatch, detention, and courthouse security and administrative assistant in the Sheriff’s Office. As in the past, applications will continue to be taken for any vacancy until the position is filled.
